Sudha learns that the tenement owner intends to evict all families to make way for a new building. With the family unable to afford higher rents, they search for alternatives in vain. A colleague, Iyengar, encourages her to consider constructing a new house as a practical solution.

Sudha and her grandfather decide to use one of his two construction sites on the outskirts to build the new house, and to sell the other to raise funds. They also plan to obtain a housing loan and pledge their jewels as security. The financial plan marks a turning point in their efforts to stay in the city.

A building contractor is brought in to draft the house plan. To get the plan approved, they end up bribing a government official, illustrating the corruption surrounding the project. The improvised scheme adds complexity to the planned construction.

Unexpected rains halt construction, inflating costs and complicating the budget. Gopi offers to help financially, but Sudha refuses because she fears it would affect her sister's marriage prospects. The delay strains their fragile finances.

Mangamma, a construction worker, becomes involved and soon uncovers that the contractor is stealing materials from the site. She informs Sudha of the misconduct, triggering action that forces the contractor to quit. Their persistence keeps the project alive.

With Mangamma's assistance, along with her supervisor and Iyengar, the construction work resumes. They coordinate labor, deter further malpractices, and push the project forward despite the earlier setback. The team builds renewed momentum.

Sudha's attempts to obtain the housing loan face delays from the bank, adding pressure to finish on time. In the meantime, she seeks help from her superior at work, only to discover he is a womanizer, complicating her finances and trust. The revelation deepens her sense of vulnerability.

With funds exhausted, Sudha contemplates halting construction altogether. Gopi steps in again to offer some financial aid, providing a glimmer of hope. The project continues, albeit with renewed strain on her decisions.

On a Sunday, Murugesan visits the site with a sense of pride but dies while returning home. Sudha is shaken by the tragedy, adding emotional weight to the already precarious project. The family mourns while the construction persists.

As completion nears, a Metropolitan Water Authority official arrives unannounced to question how they can build on land the authority had acquired. The visit threatens to derail the project and forces Sudha to confront legal and bureaucratic barriers. The tension marks a crucial turning point in the narrative.

The film closes with Sudha sitting in the panchayat office, determined to seek justice in court. A voiceover states that she will pursue legal avenues to challenge the decision and safeguard her family's future. The ending underscores resilience against systemic hurdles.
