Twelve thousand years into the future, the remnants of humanity struggle under the rule of vampires known as Nobles. These creatures, using magical technology, have established dominance following a devastating nuclear war that reshaped civilization.

The story begins with the kidnapping of Charlotte Elbourne by Meier Link, a ruthless Noble. Her family desperately seeks help, knowing that rescue is their only option to save her from a grim fate.

In their effort to rescue Charlotte, her family hires two notorious groups of bounty hunters: the Marcus Brothers and the dhampir known as D. The Marcus Brothers are famed for their merciless tactics, while D is unique due to his hybrid nature and magical abilities.

The Marcus Brothers consist of Borgoff, Kyle, Nolt, Grove, and their stepsister Leila. Each member brings their own skills: Borgoff leads with strength, Kyle excels with knives, and Nolt wields a hammer, showing their various approaches to hunting.

D uses his magical left hand to track Meier to a rest stop, where he has a tense confrontation. As Charlotte calls out to D, their meeting becomes complicated, ultimately leading to Leila's injury during the struggle.

D's pursuit of Charlotte leads him to the Barbarois, a village of monstrous beings ruled by vampires. Here, D confronts guardians sent by Meier, including a shadow-being and a fearsome werewolf, showcasing the challenges he faces.

In a climactic battle against the guardians, Nolt sacrifices himself but warns his brothers before dying. His death leads Grove to unleash his psychic powers, destroying many of the Barbarois as he reaches his limits.

As D pursues Meier's carriage, he learns about Charlotte's complex feelings for Meier, which complicate their rescue. This revelation incites Leila's anger, causing her to take swift action to capture Charlotte and bring her back.

The quest intensifies with escalating chaos as familiar allies turn against each other. In a world filled with ambushes and betrayal, former enemies forge unexpected alliances while Leila grapples with her hatred for vampires.

Through their shared struggles, Leila and D deepen their connection, vowing to honor each other's graves should they fall. Their journeys intertwine significantly as they seek the same goal for very different reasons.

The duo and the Marcus Brothers encounter Carmilla, a manipulative force with her ambitions for the future of vampires. Her presence adds layers of danger, leading to a climactic showdown filled with strategical maneuvers and intense battles.

In an emotional climax, Meier holds onto Charlotte as he takes his leave, signaling both love and sacrifice in their final moments. D and Leila witness this farewell, marking a significant emotional turning point in their journey.

Years later, Leila's legacy is honored at a family funeral, suggesting reconciliation between humans and vampires. D rides away, reflecting on the transformative power of love, loss, and the potential for a new beginning.
