Uttama Villain

Manoranjan is a celebrated film icon whose public image shines brightly even as his private life grows increasingly tangled. Twenty-five years earlier, he was forced to marry Varalakshmi, the daughter of renowned director Poornachandra Rao, even though he was deeply involved with Yamini (a relationship not shown on-screen). This past commitment casts a long shadow: his relationship with his son with Varalakshmi is troubled, and he soon discovers he has a daughter, Manonmani, born out of wedlock during his affair with Yamini. Manonmani was raised by Yamini’s husband, Jacob Zachariah, after Yamini’s death. To complicate matters further, Manoranjan is diagnosed with an advanced-stage brain cancer that leaves him with only a few months to live, a grim truth that remains hidden from most of his family. He also begins an affair with his family doctor, Arpana, a connection that will tug at the loyalties around him.

Triggered by a flood of revelations, Manoranjan makes a pivotal choice: withdraw from a film produced by Poornachandra Rao and instead embark on a new project financed by himself and steered by his former mentor, director Margadarsi. The plan is not just a career move but a bid to leave a personal legacy in the face of mortality. The rift between the old partners—Poornachandra Rao and Margadarsi—has cooled, but it still stings. Manoranjan longs for Margadarsi to direct his final screen endeavor, even as professional and familial tensions simmer at home.

News of the plan rocks the household. Poornachandra Rao and Varalakshmi react with anger and walk out, taking Manohar with them. Yet Manoranjan presses on, determined to see the project through. The film that becomes the test case for his last act is titled Uttama Villain, a fantasy comedy that intertwines cinema with legend. The universe of the movie-within-the-movie follows Uttaman, a street artist who seems to dodge death so many times that he is believed to be immortal, and who teams up with a princess named Karpagavalli to thwart the evil king Muttharasan, ruler of the Theeyam realm. Muttharasan’s obsession with Karpagavalli and dominion over the kingdom sets the stage for a playful but weighty battle between life, art, and fate.

As shooting unfolds, Manoranjan’s health deteriorates. He experiences hospital visits and bouts of weakness, and Margadarsi urges him to reveal his condition to his family. This admission rekindles a rapprochement with Poornachandra Rao and rekindles the bond with his son Manohar. Varalakshmi suffers a heart attack upon hearing the news but soon recovers, offering a sincere apology for the rough way she had tried to control Manoranjan’s life in the name of love. A deeper truth begins to emerge when Manonmani reads a letter Manoranjan had written to Yamini after their separation; the letter explains his steadfast support for Yamini’s choice to not terminate her pregnancy, despite the social stigma attached to their past. That letter softens Manonmani’s matriarchal anger and helps her accept her biological father.

Meanwhile, on the set of Uttama Villain, the filming continues against the odds. When the shoot wraps, Manoranjan’s condition worsens dramatically, leaving him delirious and unable to move with ease. Margadarsi completes the film’s editing and screens the finished project in the hospital for Manoranjan’s closest circle. The audience—family, friends, and loved ones—watches a work that blurs the line between life and fiction as Uttaman confronts Muttharasan in a final rehearsal of a stage drama (Iraniya Naadagam), seemingly dodging death once more. Yet the bitter truth arrives off-screen: Arpana informs Manohar and Manonmani that Manoranjan has died.

The movie closes with a posthumous triumph. A theatre audience enjoys the completed Uttama Villain, a final testament that Manoranjan’s life, love, and art endure beyond his passing. The film within the film, the performances, and the emotional reckonings all fuse into a luminous, bittersweet finale that honors a star’s last act while remaining faithful to the realities of his life.
