Paul Wood, Danny Robinson, Mikey Fisher, Jeremy Lynch, and Sami Hall, five British freestylers from diverse backgrounds, set out on a shared mission: to track down Maradona. Woody, Robinson, Fisher, Lynch, and Hall are introduced as the film follows their bold, hopeful journey fueled by a mix of talent, grit, and camaraderie. They head to the United States to raise funds for their North American trek, kicking off with street performances in New York City and performing on busy sidewalks as well as iconic spots like Times Square and Central Park. Their path then takes them to Memphis and Dallas, where they are showcased as halftime entertainment during a FC Dallas match, adding a new layer of public exposure to their ambitious quest.

With money tight, the group faces a rough reality: a direct flight to Mexico is out of reach. They opt for a coach to reach Mexico City, choosing a more circuitous route that emphasizes the journey as much as the destination. In Mexico, they perform across multiple cities, including at the Azteca Stadium, a site famous for the Hand of God moment, which adds a legendary backdrop to their growing reputation. The cash flow remains precarious, and the travelers realize they only have enough money for two plane tickets, forcing a hard decision about who continues together.

Lynch advocates for keeping the group intact, but the price tag—roughly $3000 for five tickets—appears insurmountable in the tight timeframe. A lucky-dip mechanism, announced by two strangers, decides the fate of who travels onward: Hall and Robinson’s names are drawn. Robinson steps back, choosing to relinquish his spot to Wood, believing Wood to be the stronger freestyler. Hall and Wood proceed south toward Guatemala, while the remaining three head back to the United States, landing in Los Angeles to perform at Venice Beach.

As tensions rise, Fisher grows frustrated with Robinson and Lynch, feeling they are not taking the opportunity seriously enough. He strikes out on his own, earning money off-screen and performing at a bar, which finally enables him to buy a plane ticket to Buenos Aires. Hall and Wood spend a night with a Guatemalan family and then travel across the country in the back of a pickup truck to La Aurora International Airport, eventually flying to Rio de Janeiro. They push onward, reaching the Argentina–Brazil border by walking over a bridge that connects the two countries, a symbolic crossing that mirrors their own crossing of borders in pursuit of a dream.

Fisher makes his way to La Bombonera, the home stadium of Boca Juniors, where Maradona is known to be a fervent supporter. He hopes to meet his idol there and speaks with Maradona’s chauffeur, trying to perform tricks in front of the car to grab Maradona’s attention, but is largely unheard as a crowd closes in around the vehicle. He leaves disappointed, but the encounter still feels like a near-miss that fuels his determination. Along the way, he forms a connection with Camilla, who acts as a translator and helps smooth the challenges of the trip.

Hall and Wood eventually reunite with Fisher in Buenos Aires, where their freestyling draws a growing crowd. They meet Daniel Arccuci, a journalist for La Nación, and are photographed for a newspaper feature. The trio also appears on Fox para todos, a television show Maradona is known to watch and even call in to. A taxi driver drops by Maradona’s house with news of their appearance, heightening the sense that their meeting with the legend could still happen. On the show, Wood delivers an impassioned speech in Spanish directed to Maradona, a moment that underscores the group’s respect and passion.

After the broadcast, Germán Paoloski informs Fisher that Maradona was sleeping, as he was set to fly to Peru that evening, leaving Wood visibly distraught at the missed connection. The group makes a final push toward Ezeiza International Airport in the hope of meeting him, but Camilla informs them that Maradona would like to meet the three freestylers at his house instead. In a pivotal moment of warmth and recognition, they finally meet Maradona: he greets them with an embrace, signs their shirts, and poses for photographs before driving away.

With money earned for two plane tickets to Buenos Aires, Robinson and Lynch eventually reach the airport, watching a news report about the others’ meeting with Maradona. The film closes on a hopeful note, with Robinson smiling, reassured that his friends’ shared dream and their idol’s acknowledgment have become a lasting memory.
