Under the Same Moon (La misma luna)

After his grandmother dies, Carlitos learns that his aunt and uncle plan to take custody of him to access the money his mother sends home. Fearing being separated from his mother forever and determined to reunite with her, the nine-year-old decides to take the dangerous journey across the border, believing this is the only way to be with Rosario again.

Enrique is a migrant worker struggling to survive in the US himself, and taking on the responsibility of a young child adds significant risk and burden to his already precarious situation. He explicitly tells Carlitos to leave when they reach Tucson, frustrated by the child's persistence and the dangers their journey entails.

After Enrique tells Carlitos to leave, a group of men approaches with the intent to rob the boy of his backpack. Despite his earlier frustration and the risks involved, Enrique cannot stand by and watch a child be harmed. He intervenes to protect Carlitos, which solidifies their bond and marks the moment Enrique fully commits to helping the boy reach his mother.

Carlitos seeks out his estranged father Oscar Aguilar Pons in Tucson, hoping for help or support in his journey. However, his father makes empty promises and fails to follow through, disappointing Carlitos. When police officers confront Carlitos and Enrique in East LA, Enrique realizes they are in serious trouble. To give Carlitos a chance to escape, he throws his coffee at the officers to create a distraction. This brave act allows Carlitos to run away while Enrique is arrested, sacrificing his own freedom so the boy can reach his mother.

After losing her job due to immigration troubles and learning about Carlitos' dangerous border crossing and his grandmother's death, Rosario desperate for stability decides to marry a U.S. citizen. This marriage is intended to help her obtain a green card, which would allow her to legally return to Mexico to search for her son.

Rosario uses a specific payphone in East Los Angeles for her weekly calls home, which is the location Carlitos uses to try to find her. The payphone becomes the central meeting point for their reunion, though the area also contains a P.O. box that initially misleads Carlitos and Enrique.

When Carlitos finally finds the payphone and sees Rosario across the street, she shouts for him not to cross yet. After being stranded in El Paso when the coyotes' vehicle is impounded, Carlitos drops his money as he exits the car. Desperate and alone, he approaches a man asking for help with a bus ticket. Instead, the man attempts to sell the young boy to a pimp, exploiting the child's vulnerability and desperation.

Carlitos is saved from the pimp by a compassionate local woman who takes him in. When police raid her home, Carlitos escapes in the chaos and finds himself running alongside Enrique. Though initially reluctant, Enrique agrees to help the boy after witnessing him being chased by police, beginning their journey together.

Rosario loses her job due to immigration troubles, likely related to her undocumented status. This loss compounds her difficulties in the US and contributes to her desperate decision to marry a U.S. citizen for a green card, as she struggles to maintain stability while trying to find a way to reunite with her son.
