After his wife's funeral, grieving Troy receives a letter she wrote while ill, asking him to build a porch for Aunt Hilda. He drives to her desert home, where Aunt Hilda, a band of eccentric older women, and Bobby, a wise cowboy, help him face his loss. Their support shows Troy his pain is not unique and guides him to see the difference between true love and fleeting infatuation, allowing him to move forward.
