In 1763, Abigail Hale is tried for the death of a Royal Navy officer who died while trying to save her sick brother from the press gangs. The judge condemns her to hang but offers the king's mercy in the form of transportation to the British colonies as an indentured servant. Abby accepts the offer, choosing to leave England rather than remain at the gallows.

Aboard the transport ship heading to North America, Abby becomes the focus of a volatile auction. Martin Garth and Captain Christopher Holden duel in a bidding war, which Holden wins, effectively freeing Abby. A complication arises when Holden learns his fiancée Diana has married his brother, adding personal tension to the deal.

Garth bribes a slave dealer to claim Holden never bought Abby and destroys the bill of freedom. With Abby's legal status compromised, Garth transports her toward the western frontier where she is intended to be sold, amid the guns trade and rising tensions of the era.

Holden's ally John Fraser shares information from an Indian who tried to kill him, deepening the intrigue. Abby and Holden's paths cross again on the frontier, but Garth convinces Holden that Abby came to him of her own accord, complicating their relationship.

Garth's influence grows as his Indian wife Hannah arrives with a message from Chief Guyasuta. A meeting with George Washington, Holden, the colonial governor Sir William, and others is convened to address a possible native uprising. Holden suggests sending peace belts to the Indians, and Garth recommends Holden, who reluctantly accepts the assignment.

Holden and his two companions are ambushed, underscoring the danger of the frontier. He resolves to confront Garth, and upon finding him, Abby is re‑encountered; their previous misunderstanding is cleared, and they flee together toward Fort Pitt.

Garth arrives to claim Abby as a bond slave, prompting Holden to challenge him to a duel. The governor ultimately awards Abby to Garth after presenting a bill of sale, leaving Holden and Abby separated once again.

Garth is summoned by Guyasuta and takes Abby along to a Native camp as tensions mount. The alliance between colonial authorities and Native groups becomes increasingly precarious while Abby becomes a pawn in the politics of power.

With a nearby settlement wiped out, the governor orders Fort Pitt to be prepared for a siege. The looming threat of attack intensifies, forcing both sides to brace for a brutal confrontation.

Holden walks unarmed into Guyasuta's camp to rescue Abby and, after a daring escape, they race back to Fort Pitt to warn of Indian treachery. Garth convinces authorities that Holden is a deserter, resulting in a death sentence for Holden while Abby is returned to Garth. Abby strikes a bargain with Garth to secure Holden's escape, though Garth schemes to kill Holden in the escape attempt.

Hannah, Garth's Indian wife, learns that he is abandoning her for Abby and warns Holden. She takes Holden's place in danger and is fatally shot, sacrificing herself to buy time for the others. The loss underscores the brutal stakes of the siege and the human cost of the conflict.

Fresh reinforcements arrive just in time, though the relief wagons carry casualties. Holden ultimately defeats Garth in a final shootout, leaving Abby free to marry Holden and marking a bittersweet victory over the dangers that tested them all.
