In 1945, a squadron of B-24 Liberators transports the 101st Airborne over the North Atlantic as rumors spread of a Nazi superweapon. The radio reports Berlin's fall and a surrender is imminent, but whispers persist of a weapon aimed at the United States. The mission is framed by the threat of an unknown power that could change the war.

Captain Steve Rogers spearheads a bold assault on a fortress on a remote island near Norway. He breaches defenses and confronts Herr Kleiser, who is revealed to be an extraterrestrial shape-shifter. The superweapon launches, Rogers sacrifices himself by leaping onto the rocket to disable it, and he sinks into the sea, presumed dead.

Decades later, Rogers' body is recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury and frozen for revival. In the modern era, he is thawed and brought into the present day, where he must adapt to a world of new threats and technologies. The revival marks the first step in assembling a new team to confront an alien invasion.

Bruce Banner, a gamma scientist, works for S.H.I.E.L.D. on a prototype super soldier serum. He also relies on medications that suppress his Hulk transformations, keeping the beast at bay. His work places him at the center of the evolving plan to create a capable team against a coming threat.

S.H.I.E.L.D. launches a satellite to track the invading alien ships, hoping to anticipate their moves. The satellite is destroyed by the invaders, shattering the initial defense and exposing the agency's vulnerability. Nick Fury decides to form a new, more agile team—the Avengers—to confront the looming invasion.

Fury and Rogers seek out Thor, who initially resists joining due to his own protest actions. The recruitment brings together Captain America, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, Giant Man, Wasp, Black Widow, and Betty Ross. The diverse group must learn to work as a unit amid personal doubts and shifting loyalties.

Fury briefs the team on the Chitauri invasion and the use of vibranium technology. Banner battles with the Hulk persona even as he tries to control his powers for the mission. Rogers remains wary of taking command, unsure if he is ready to lead this rapidly assembled team.

The Avengers' first mission is to capture a Chitauri spy inside a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. They ignore Rogers' orders and act on ego, failing to contain the threat and letting the spy escape with valuable information. Fury responds to the blunder by recognizing their need to act cohesively as a unit.

With the spy escaped and information about S.H.I.E.L.D. leaked, Fury fires Hank Pym and his wife Wasp leaves the team. Tony Stark (Iron Man) resigns from S.H.I.E.L.D. in protest, and Rogers also chooses to depart rather than lead a misfiring group. The Avengers' leadership crisis sets the stage for Banner to unleash a more drastic plan.

Facing a growing threat, Fury orders Banner to apply the serum broadly to potential soldiers in a bid to assemble a new force. Betty Ross discovers the move is a means to control the Hulk, not a pure safety measure. Banner steps into a 'rebirth chamber' and becomes the Hulk with his mind intact, setting the stage for a battle that tests his control and the team's trust.

An all-out assault against the invaders initially fails, but the assembled Avengers push forward. Thor joins the fight, and together they unleash a coordinated counterattack. They manage to crash three Chitauri ships into the ocean, halting the immediate invasion.

Hulk loses his temper and rampages, overpowering Avengers around him. He brutally defeats enemies, even injuring Iron Man's suit and crushing a Giant Man, before lifting Thor's hammer in a brutal display of power. The team intervenes to medicate Hulk and restore Banner's mind long enough to regain control.

After calming, Banner is kept in a glass cell to prevent further trust issues, while the remaining Avengers celebrate their victory. The mission demonstrates Captain America's leadership and the team's potential as a cohesive unit. The public display of teamwork signals a new era for global defense.

Banner, now contained and supervised, remains under watch as the Avengers' first victory cements their status as Earth's mightiest heroes. Fury's trust is shaken but his plan moves forward with his newly formed team. Captain America becomes the symbol of their leadership and unity going forward.
