Tumbbad

The tale begins with the Goddess of Prosperity sheltering Hastar in her womb after his greed for her gold. To save the world, the gods compel Hastar to be forgotten. The people of Tumbbad build a temple for Hastar, provoking divine anger and cursing the village with relentless rain.

In 1918, Vinayak's mother is the zamindar Sarkar's mistress, and Vinayak and his brother Sadashiv stay with an old woman chained in a separate room. Sadashiv is injured by a fall from a tree, and their mother travels to seek help. The old woman escapes and tries to eat Vinayak; he invokes Hastar to put her to sleep. Sarkar and Sadashiv die, and Vinayak and his mother flee to Pune.

Fifteen years later, Vinayak returns to Tumbbad to seek Sarkar's treasure. The old woman still lives with a tree growing from her body and agrees to reveal the treasure's location only if he ends her suffering. She guides him to the goddess' womb inside Sarkar's mansion and teaches him to retrieve the gold.

Inside the goddess' womb, Hastar has waited for eons, hungry for the grain he was denied. Vinayak descends into the womb with a rope, draws a circle of flour to protect himself, and lures Hastar with a dough doll. While Hastar is distracted, Vinayak steals coins from Hastar's loincloth and escapes.

After escaping, Vinayak burns the old woman to end her suffering and continues to travel between Pune and Tumbbad, selling the coins to build his wealth. He keeps feeding his greed and returns to the hunt for more treasure.

Raghav, a moneylender, follows Vinayak to Tumbbad, curious about the source of his sudden wealth. Vinayak tricks him into entering Hastar's womb with a dough doll. Hastar attacks Raghav, and Vinayak ends Hastar's suffering by burning him again.

By 1947, Vinayak is consumed by greed and decadence, and he trains his son Pandurang to retrieve Hastar's coins. He takes Pandurang to Tumbbad, warning him not to bring a dough doll.

The mansion has been appropriated by the new government of independent India, forcing Vinayak to return to Tumbbad to grab as much gold as possible before he loses the property. The pressure of political change accelerates his treasure obsession.

Pandurang proposes stealing Hastar's entire loincloth and tries luring Hastar with multiple dough dolls. Hastar multiplies into many clones inside the womb, trapping Vinayak and Pandurang in a deadly swarm.

As a last resort, Vinayak ties the dough dolls around himself and faces Hastar and his clones, buying Pandurang enough time to escape. The struggle intensifies as the clones close in around him.

Outside the womb, Pandurang finds his father Vinayak now cursed by Hastar's gold. Using Hastar's name to put Vinayak to sleep, Pandurang then burns him and leaves Tumbbad behind.
