The film, winner of the 1988 National Film Award for First Film of a Director, is set in the 1st‑century B.C. Buddhist town of Sariput. A sandstorm leaves two monks and children in the monastery. Twenty years later the monks are aged, the youths fall in love, a monk forces the boy into vows, the girl saves him; they are expelled as sandstorm returns.
