Three years after her husband’s death, Emily Spengler, a devoted 2nd-grade teacher in the small Washington town of South Woodbourne, faces the holidays with a quiet mixture of resolve and longing as she prepares for Christmas and for the possibility of welcoming home her daughter, Heather Spengler, a Boston College student with her own ideas about how to spend the season.
Seeking guidance and a touch of holiday magic, Emily calls her friend, Faith Kerrigan, a divorced event planner based in San Francisco, hoping for reassurance and practical advice on balancing tradition with Heather’s evolving plans.
Meanwhile in Boston, Charles Johnson, an English professor and writer, wrestles with finishing the draft of his latest novel, his deadlines looming and his inspiration wavering. His brother, Ray Johnson, a successful owner of a software security company, suggests a little change of scenery could help him concentrate and get back into the flow of his storytelling.
Back in Washington, Emily decides to surprise Heather in Boston, only to learn that her daughter has already mapped out a trip with her boyfriend, Jason, to Phoenix, Arizona, to stay at his grandparents’ home. The timing seems off, but another possibility emerges when Emily and Charles discover a house swapping website and agree to trade homes for the week, hoping the change of scenery might bring clarity and fresh Christmas spirit to all involved.
Edwardian-style Christmas lights and a sense of nostalgia greet Emily when she arrives at Charles’s house in Boston, while Emily’s own home in Washington overflows with holiday decor, a testament to memories both sweet and painful. Faith, determined to reconnect with Emily, travels by plane and bus to surprise her, only to discover that Charles is also there, a surprising collision of two different worlds under one roof. With the next bus back to Seattle not leaving until Christmas, Faith stays, much to Charles’s consternation, and the week begins to unfold with unexpected closeness.
As the week progresses, a sequence of practical and emotional moments unfold: Emily triggers the apartment alarm, and Ray arrives with a police officer, since Charles hadn’t warned him about the arrangement. The coincidence becomes a catalyst, and soon Emily and Ray spend time together, trading stories about past Christmases and the losses and hopes that shape their present. Across town, Charles toils at his desk, and Faith offers thoughtful feedback on his draft, a catalyst that helps him overcome writer’s block and find momentum toward finishing the novel.
Meanwhile in Arizona, Heather’s homesickness prompts [Jason] to buy plane tickets to Boston so she can spend Christmas with her mother. When Heather finally arrives, Ray presents Emily with a pair of earrings, and given that her stay is brief, they decide to keep things simple for the moment, acknowledging the new possibilities without rushing the future.
On Christmas Day, Charles drives Faith to the bus station to see her off, but he halts the bus at the last moment to spare her a lonely journey home. Faith, touched, kisses him as the bus pulls away without her, a small moment that hints at a budding new chapter. In Boston, Emily, Heather, and Jason arrive at Ray’s apartment with a Christmas tree, and the four of them share a warm, hopeful Christmas together, a living room full of lights, laughter, and the sense that family can be found in multiple forms.
As the season closes, Emily learns that Ray has sold his company, signaling a major step forward for him and a readiness to begin a new life chapter. The story then leaps forward to a quiet, satisfying future: one year later, Ray and Emily are married and living in Washington, while Faith and Charles are also married and expecting a child. They are all visited at Christmas by their loved ones, and the film ends on a note of celebration, resilience, and the promise of continuing connections that endure beyond loss.
