Jenny Stewart, Joan Crawford, is a Broadway diva with a fiery temper and a demanding attitude, and she spends rehearsals for her new musical, Evening with Jenny, feeling more frustrated than inspired. By day she rewriting dialogue, rearranging music, and redesigning costumes, cutting down anyone who seems to stand in her way. Yet when the lights go down and she’s alone at home, a different, softer ache surfaces as she cries herself to sleep. The friction already simmering beneath the surface is intensified when her rehearsal pianist quits and is replaced by Tye Graham, Michael Wilding. Tye is a former critic who was blinded during the war and cannot read the changes Jenny makes in the score, a detail that immediately irks her.

Tye’s proposal to modify some of the music sets off a clash, and Jenny ends up ordering the director Joe Denner, Harry Morgan, to fire him. The power struggle feels transactional and personal, but fate nudges them back together when they unexpectedly cross paths in a restaurant.
