Katherine Lewis dies after being struck by a bike messenger and awakens in Limbo, a place between Heaven and Hell. She is told she must perform community service as a mythological being before she can go to Heaven, and signs a contract to become the Tooth Fairy. Raul trains her on how to perform her duties.

On her first night, Katherine visits a lonely 12-year-old boy, Bobby Jameson, and is accidentally discovered by him. In Limbo's rules, only children with baby teeth can see her, revealing the invisibility of magical beings to those who have shed innocence. Katherine asks Bobby's father, Thomas, and Bobby to attend a baseball game together, signaling a possible deepening bond.
