Set on the eve of the August 9, 1945 atomic bombing of Nagasaki, the film adapts Mitsukaru Inoue’s story to portray ordinary citizens—a newlywed couple, an expectant mother, and lovers parting as the young man is conscripted—pursuing their hopes for ‘tomorrow.’ Their lives are abruptly shattered, a tragedy underscored by Teizo Matsumura’s mournful score.
