What Happens in Tomie: Rebirth: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Tomie: Rebirth (2001) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Hideo Kamata, Shugo Oshinari, is an artist who paints his girlfriend Tomie Kawakami, Miki Sakai, but she dismisses the portrait as a crude effort and he kills her in a jealous rage with an art knife. He then enlists his friends Shunsuke and Takumi Aoyama, Shunsuke Itô and Satoshi Tsumabuki, to help bury her. Later, the three attend a party and Tomie reappears, prompting Hideo to fall into shock and take his own life.

Tomie latches onto Shunsuke, but Shunsuke’s mother kills her, and they cut her up together in an unnatural ecstasy. They burn her head, which has already begun to regenerate and sprout crude limbs for locomotion. Unbeknownst to them, Tomie’s supernatural blood has touched Hideo’s painting of her at the moment of his murder, and that blood allows her to regenerate undetected.

Takumi Aoyama’s girlfriend, Hitomi Kitamura, Kumiko Endo, becomes possessed by another Tomie, spreading in a viral fashion. The two Tomies become aware of each other and, in a jealous bid to erase the other, set out to eliminate one another.

Hitomi, though, remains conscious even as she is controlled by Tomie; she does not want to become a monster, and she resolves to end her life. Yet at a waterfall, as she nears suicide, Tomie’s head grows on the side of Hitomi’s neck and compels her to stop.

Takumi gives his younger sister Tomoko Hosoda, Yutaka Nakajima, the portrait of Tomie, which still bears some of Tomie’s blood. After the two Tomies finally manage to erase each other, and after the others are slain, Takumi’s sister mourns for all who were lost and goes to the waterfall to cast flowers into the water. A small facial mole appears beneath the sister’s left eye, suggesting that, because Takumi gave her the portrait of Tomie, she may have inherited Tomie’s possession as well. Thus, the sister is revealed to be the newest Tomie.
