Sylvia Russell is a power‑driven woman whose single‑minded goals make her manipulate her children. She maintains a sadistic hold over her son and daughter, steering their lives to serve her aims. By corrupting a servant girl she sabotages her daughter's marriage, then uses the maid to compromise the son‑in‑law, while slowly eroding her timid, unambitious husband's confidence.
