July 1942 finds a Soviet rifle regiment withdrawing to the outskirts of Stalingrad, seeking a brief pause on the harsh Don steppe after taking heavy losses. In the uneasy quiet between shelling and marching, the men trade stories, talk about life back home, share small comforts, bathe, and drift toward sleep under a gray, watchful sky. One soldier, Piotr Lopakhin [Vasily Shukshin], known for his merry tricks, slips away to a nearby village for salt and a bucket to cook freshly caught crayfish. He tries to charm an old Cossack woman [Angelina Stepanova], but she rebuffs him, letting the locals fend for themselves as the regiment pulls back. Yet beneath Lopakhin’s lively, jocular exterior there emerges a serious, country-wary man who is deeply concerned with what the war is doing to their homeland, and the old woman’s response—though terse—seems to acknowledge his hidden burden.

Interruptions break the moment of meal and talk when an order arrives: the regiment must occupy and hold the high ground in the middle of the steppe. They dig into rocky soil, improvising defensive positions, and manage to repel the first tank attack with a combination of grenades and anti-tank rifles. Before the second wave arrives, German aircraft press the assault, inflicting heavy casualties as the fight intensifies and Private Nikolai Strel’tsov [Vyacheslav Tikhonov], Lopakhin’s close comrade, suffers shell shock from the bombardment. The second German tank thrust nearly breaks through, but fresh Soviet reinforcements rush in to push the enemy back and restore the line.

That night, the regiment moves through a blazing wheat field, preserving what food remains and pressing forward. Private Ivan Zvyagintsev [Sergey Bondarchuk], a former combine operator, watches the landscape around him with horror at the scale of loss—the grain, the supplies, the men—yet he keeps moving with the group. At a nearby farm, Lopakhin’s light-hearted bravado resurfaces as he secures two jugs of cold milk for his comrades, a small mercy amid hardship. Later, during the next engagement, Lopakhin uses a PTRD to shoot down a German Junkers Ju 87 attack aircraft, which crashes and explodes on a hill, briefly brightening the otherwise gray, war-torn horizon.

Time passes and the regiment engages again, this time facing even more crushing pressure as armored columns press their positions. The young corporal Kochetygov dies a heroic death, managing to ignite a tank with a Molotov cocktail as his final act, and the remaining soldiers mount a counterattack. In the chaos, Zvyagintsev is struck by artillery shrapnel and falls, gravely wounded. The field forces provide aid as a nurse [Tatiana Bozhok] stands by the wounded, lifting Zvyagintsev from the blast area and into safety, the weight of loss felt in every breath.

In the field hospital, the injuries are tended with grim efficiency. The surgeon [Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy] works without anesthesia, removing numerous fragments from Zvyagintsev’s legs and back as the sounds of distant combat echo in the hall. The regiment moves on, entering another village where food is scarce and the locals are wary of returning soldiers. Lopakhin makes another attempt to win over Natalya Stepanovna [Nonna Mordyukova], a local woman, helping her with her farm work and hoping for some respite. At first, Natalya rebuffs him with a sharp word and a black eye, but the next morning she reveals a table laden with food, explaining that the locals provided for them only because the war had tested their village and they wanted protection in return.

As the men regroup, Lopakhin recognizes Nikolai Streltsov in the crowd—he has managed to escape from the field hospital and rejoin his unit, a testament to the resilience and stubborn will that drives the regiment forward. A colonel [Evgeniy Samoylov] arrives to acknowledge their perseverance, heartily thanking the fighters and kissing the banner of the regiment as a gesture of renewed resolve. With the banner secured and the troops continuing their march, the large forces of the Soviet army push further toward Stalingrad, their pace steady even as the cost of each mile lingers in the air.
