In rural France in the 1890s, Augustin wanders: near Bourges he gets lost, finds a château and falls for Yvonne; later, learning she lives in Paris, he follows her and meets a woman. François reunites Augustin with Yvonne; they marry, but Augustin leaves the next day to keep a promise to her brother, leaving François to comfort her while pregnant.
