Sakthi comes back to his rural Theni village after completing his education in London and introduces his westernised girlfriend Bhanu to his family. He reveals plans to open a chain of restaurants in Madras and to marry Bhanu, which disappoints his father who wanted him to help the local residents instead. The clash between modern aspirations and traditional duties sets the tone for the village's coming conflicts.

Periyasamy Thevar remains the respected village chief, while his younger relatives and the feud-barred factions feud beneath the surface. His elder son Muthuvel is a drunkard, and Mayan Thevar holds a grudge, fueling distrust across families. Rumors that Periyasamy poisoned Chinnasamy into paralysis deepen the village’s long-standing bitterness.

Sakthi and Bhanu venture to an old temple that has been closed for years due to the feud. Their ally Isakki helps break the seal so they can enter and explore. Mayan learns of the intrusion, and a riot between Mayan's supporters and Periya’s faction erupts in the village.

Mayans’s men sever Isakki’s arm as punishment for opening the temple without permission, escalating the conflict. To quell the violence, Periya Thevar contemplates apologising, but Sakthi sides with his father and, with help from IAS friends in the government, secures a legal reopening of the temple for all villagers.

Mayan hires goons to blow up a dam guarding a portion of the village, using explosives that flood half the village and cause many deaths, including infants. Sakthi spots the saboteur and gives chase, but the man refuses to reveal Mayan’s involvement for fear of his own family’s safety. The truth remains hidden, deepening Sakthi’s resolve to protect the villagers.

Moved by the villagers’ suffering, Sakthi decides to stay back in the village with Maya Thevar to help rebuild and counter Mayan’s influence. He confronts the growing violence and tries to steer the community toward peaceful, lawful means. This marks his commitment to leadership beyond his personal ambitions.

Mayan uses political clout to force a landowner to restrict access to the road, stoking tensions about who should control the land. Sakthi and Periyasamy invite both sides to a village panchayat to negotiate, but accusations fly and the mood turns volatile. Periyasamy dies of a heart attack during sleep, leaving Sakthi to assume the role of village chief.

Paramasivam, Mayan’s maternal uncle and a powerful landowner, fears his daughter Panchavarnam’s future under Mayan’s wrath. He agrees to open the land for all villagers to improve access, and he begins planning Panchavarnam’s marriage to a Madurai engineer to secure her security. The delicate political balance prompts Sakthi to navigate the situation carefully to keep peace in the village.

On the day of the wedding, the would-be groom from Madurai runs away, fearing Mayan’s reprisals. With her father’s consent, Sakthi marries Panchavarnam, despite his lingering feelings for Bhanu. Bhanu returns, learns of the arrangement, and decides to step away from the lovers’ triangle.

After the wedding, Sakthi and Panchavarnam are returning from dropping Bhanu at the station when a drive-by attempt is staged against them. They narrowly escape, an incident that deepens their bond and marks the start of their life together as husband and wife. Mayan’s shadow lingers over the couple and the village.

Weeks later, the HR&CE department pushes ahead with the temple festival and the long-pending first respect. Muthuvel’s drunkenness disqualifies him, and Mayan argues that he is the rightful elder to receive it. Sakthi steps back from taking the first respect for the sake of peace, but Mayan taunts him and escalates the tension.

During the temple chariot festival, Mayan plants a bomb that kills people from both sides of the village. Sakthi protects Mayan’s family and helps them escape, then locates Mayan’s hiding place. In the ensuing confrontation, Sakthi beheads Mayan and faces the community’s demand to share the blame. He chooses to surrender to the police and urges peace and education for all as the village looks on.

Sakthi surrenders to the authorities and asks the villagers to maintain peace and education for all. He goes to jail, leaving the village in the care of his sister-in-law and the continuing hope that education will heal the rift. The community begins rebuilding with a new respect for rule of law and common welfare.
