The Tip-Off

Two men waiting on a street take Tommy to a hidden location to repair a radio. He is not allowed to see where he is and is warned to behave. The setup establishes the film's dangerous premise.

Left alone to work, Tommy follows a wire into the bedroom and ends up lying under the bed. A telephone rings and a woman answers from the bathroom, unaware of his presence. He is effectively trapped, visible only by the legs she reveals.

The woman finishes her call and explains that Kayo McClure, a famed fighter, lives in the apartment. She reveals that she is Babyface, McClure's partner. Tommy realizes he has stumbled into the private world of a celebrity and his safety will depend on them.

When McClure returns home, Tommy remains hidden as Nick Vatelli and his men threaten the fighter. Tommy uses the radio to pretend police, driving the gang away and saving McClure. Grateful, McClure offers help whenever Tommy needs it and gives him a ball ticket.

Tommy goes to the ball as invited by McClure. Babyface is eager to dance with him, but to avoid jealousy he dances with someone else first. The ball scene introduces romance and tension into the plot.

The girl Tommy dances with turns out to be Edna Moreno, Nick Vatelli's fiancée. This creates a conflict of interest as Tommy becomes entangled with both Babyface and Edna. The delicate balance at the party starts to unravel.

Nick arrives at the ball and clashes with Tommy. Sensing danger, Tommy escorts Edna away and hides her at McClure's place for the night. The trio's fragile alliance is tested by Nick's threat.

The next day Babyface argues with McClure about hiding the kids; she threats to leave him. Edna quietly departs the apartment, unsettled by the conflicts around her. The rift deepens the personal stakes.

Tommy, with McClure's help, discovers where Edna has gone and sets out to keep her from marrying Nick. A tense pursuit culminates in keeping Edna from a bitter wedding bond. The plan hinges on Tommy's quick thinking and McClure's support.

The conflict with Nick is resolved and Tommy and Edna decide to marry. McClure's mentorship and the earlier dangers bind the couple together. The film closes on their wedding as a sign of new beginnings.
