A German-made effort to update Shakespeare stands out as one of the best and least self‑conscious works in this niche. The script presents a “mufti” version of Hamlet, with a young Hardy Krüger determined to prove his uncle murdered his father. Direct references to the original abound, including a reenactment of the crime for the uncle’s benefit and recurrent appearances of the hero’s father’s ghost.
