Heir Karl Heinrich of the principality Rutania grows up isolated in a castle, unaware of life beyond its walls. As an adult he studies at the University of Heidelberg, where he bonds with classmates and falls for Katie Ruder, his childhood friend. Unrest forces his recall; war erupts, and he returns to Heidelberg to bid a painful farewell to Katie.
