An American orbital weapons platform crashes in a remote stretch of the Pacific, triggering a tense political chess game. The island nation involved is quick to act, but U.S. naval forces seal off any escape, knowing the fallen device could allow any country to threaten the United States from space. Because the island’s ally is China, neither side wants a full‑scale war or to lose face, so they settle on a carefully managed surrogate conflict: a single representative from each country will clash on a small tropical island chosen for the showdown. General Lewis Meyers [Broderick Crawford] opposes the plan, convinced that American firepower alone can decide the outcome if given the chance.

American intelligence then tracks down Jacob Gallery [Darren McGavin], a hard-edged hunter with a Vietnam‑era past. Court‑martialed after an unauthorized nighttime hunt that left his unit decimated and his trophies in tow, Gallery is viewed by Meyers as a grim but effective instrument if pushed to the limit. The decision to enlist him weighs heavily: the Secretary wants someone willing to bend the rules in service of victory, even at the cost of personal risk.

Gallery comes in with a demand—$1 million upfront—and is then put through a focused training regime, armed with a formidable kit that includes a pair of Madsen submachine guns bolted together, capable of firing both regular ammunition and birdshot. He’s warned that the greatest threat on the island isn’t opponents but a fungi that can rapidly infect any wound. A former island resident offers practical advice on where to find fresh water, a critical lifeline in the harsh tropical environment.

The showdown is set: Gallery is dropped by a surfaced submarine just as his counterpart from the other side, Yuro [Mako], is deployed, with the island’s inhabitants relocated to Guam to minimize civilian danger. Gallery quickly establishes a base inside a hidden cave and begins a deliberate campaign, punctuating his guerrilla tactics with environmental sabotage—polluting the water sources to force Yuro toward the last remaining pond. Yuro fights back, and Gallery ambushes him at the pond; Yuro escapes but is wounded. Gallery discovers Yuro’s treetop base and plants a grenade to booby‑trap it, though Yuro had installed razor blades in the tree trunk, leaving Gallery with a painful, gnarly cut to his leg.

Back aboard the submarine, Meyers reveals a second plan: to secretly insert Bryant [Sam Elliott], a Marine captain who respects authority but can act decisively when the moment demands. Gallery, after four days of mixed success, has not provided the decisive victory the operation seeks, so the shift to Bryant is framed as a last resort.

On the ground, Gallery sinks deeper into a fever as the island’s dangers and isolation wear on him. He continues to rig traps, while Yuro closes in with relentless resourcefulness. The two men collide along a rocky shoreline: Bryant holds Yuro at gunpoint and urges Gallery to kill the rival to become the hero he’s expected to be. Instead, Gallery makes a harder choice, shooting Bryant and allowing Yuro to escape with his life.

Returning to his cave, Gallery discovers the dead body of another countryman in one of Yuro’s snares—a grim signal that betrayal crosses borders as easily as distance. The hunter’s resolve wavers as Yuro appears, pleading for Gallery to abandon the treacherous sides that sent a second man into this unlawful duel and offering to help save him. Gallery refuses to join him, and, after a tense moment, he empty‑clips his remaining rounds into the greenery and kills Yuro. He then reaches for his transmitter to declare victory, but the infection inside him spreads, and he discards the device before dying.

In the end, the battle that began with imperial ambitions resolves into a solitary struggle for survival—an outcome shaped by strategy, loyalty, and a brutal toll that no amount of power or propaganda could reverse.
