Kristen Marshall, Lindsey McKeon, a high school senior and class president in a wealthy town, accidentally hits Richard Ashbury, a socially minded cyclist who has been posting flyers for a local food and clothing drive, as she drives to school. The incident foreshadows the shock of financial ruin that will ripple through Kristen’s world: her family’s wealth evaporates and so does her boyfriend Jason Beckham’s, threatening Kristen’s once-clear path to college. Kristen and Jason, along with their friend Graham Jensen, Dave McGowan, head to Graham’s father’s lake house where Richard has also been invited. When Richard realizes he holds a winning lottery ticket, Kristen sees a dangerous opportunity to change her fortunes, and she tries to seduce him at the pool—only to have him turn her down.
The next days unfold with mounting peril. Kristen, urged by Jason, accompanies him on a hike where he is pushed toward Richard, yet Jason slips and Richard saves him. Later, during a game of Twister, a disappointed Kristen deliberately leans into a kiss with Richard to provoke jealousy in Jason, who responds with a punch. The morning after, Jason apologizes but then suggests another hike, during which he again pushes Richard off the same cliff. Richard begs for help, and Jason offers his belt as a makeshift rope, but when Richard grabs it, Jason drops him, killing him. Jason searches Richard’s body for the ticket but cannot find it. He returns to the lake house, claiming the rain made it too slippery to move the body. That evening Richard, somehow surviving the fall, struggles back to the house and dies on the floor.
Graham urges them to take the body to the police, but Kristen changes course, offering to drive Richard’s body herself before pulling back halfway and leaving the scene. Kristen finds the lottery ticket on Richard’s body, but her act is seen by Graham, who quickly realizes that Jason is the killer and refuses to help any longer. Kristen then convinces Jason to knock Graham out and strike him with a fire iron, killing him. As tangle of fear and guilt tightens, Amber Whidden, Kiele Sanchez, Graham’s girlfriend, drives to the lake house and knocks on the door. Kristen sends Jason to drive Richard and Graham off a cliff in a car while she distracts Amber. The plan unfolds, but the next morning Amber persuades them to search for Graham; they discover the car wreck and report it to the police, intensifying the net of suspicion around Kristen and Jason.
The couple’s web of lies starts to unravel: Jason learns that Kristen has lied to him about many things, and Amber uncovers camcorder tapes showing the group discussing the lottery ticket. A confrontation escalates as Amber and her friends break into Amber’s house to retrieve the tape, while Amber alerts the police. Kristen, meanwhile, buys new scratch-off tickets and, along with Jason, tries to cash in on the supposedly winning ticket, only to learn it was purchased after the drawing and is invalid. Amber brings a Brad Loree as a police officer to intervene, but Jason knocks the officer out with a tire iron. In the chaos that follows, Kristen and Jason chase Amber, throwing the new tickets from the car window as Jason crashes into a gas truck; a cigarette from Kristen ignites both vehicles, and they perish in a fireball explosion.
In the aftermath, Amber watches a camcorder video revealing Richard’s plan to trick Kristen with his invalid lottery ticket, then scratches off Kristen’s new tickets and discovers a real winning ticket for the grand prize. Caught between fear and opportunity, she keeps this information from her friend Maria, Veena Sood, leaving the door open for a dangerous twist of fate in what remains of the story. The chain of choices—greed, deception, and the deadly consequences of trying to outsmart luck—leaves a town forever altered by a single moment that began with a hit-and-ended in a blaze of tragedy but ends with the possibility of a hidden winning ticket waiting to change everything for one last survivor.
