The setting is Central Asia during the Russian Civil War. In the post-revolutionary twenties, when the power in European Russia is officially in the hands of the workers and peasants, the struggle against the Basmachi rebels intensifies. When a Red Army detachment captures Sultan Nazar, Anatoliy Solonitsyn, the brains behind the Basmachi faction, a decision is made to escort him urgently to the Bukhara province. The mission is urgent, dangerous, and steeped in vigilance as the region’s politics ripple through every mile of the journey.
Leading the mission is Mirzo, [Aleksandr Kaydanovskiy], a grizzled mountain trapper and conscientious revolutionary. His hard-won experience with treacherous terrain becomes essential as the group threads their way through precarious paths and climbs steep mountain ridges that would overwhelm the inexperienced. The expedition brings together a small, uneasy band: Mirzo, his brother Kova, the captured Sultan Nazar, Nazar’s daughter Zarangis [Anvara Alimova], and the slave Saifulla. Each member carries a different burden and motive, yet they are bound by a fragile purpose: get Sultan Nazar to safety and to the authorities in Bukhara.
Behind them, the chase tightens. Fottabek [Shavkat Abdusalamov], the ruthless new head of the Basmachis, pursues with relentless resolve, turning the pursuit into a high-stakes test of endurance and nerve. The group must not only hold together under pressure but also contend with the mountain’s harsh elements and its natural dangers. The terrain itself becomes a formidable adversary, testing every plan and every instinct for survival.
As the caravan moves through narrow ledges and wind-swept passes, the story unfolds with a quiet, steady intensity. The bonds between Mirzo and the others are tested by isolation, the weight of their mission, and the constant threat of pursuit. The simple objective of escorting a prisoner evolves into a meditation on duty, resilience, and the human costs of war in a landscape where nature and politics collide.
In the end, the journey through the high country becomes more than just a convoy across perilous terrain; it is a window into a turbulent era where loyalties are strained, bravery is measured in small, careful steps, and survival depends on trust forged in the most unlikely of circumstances. Mirzo’s leadership and the fragile coalition around him illuminate the grit required to navigate a world where power shifts and danger never fully recedes.
