The narrative shifts to a college-town setting where Dana and Jules are engaged in deep discussions about their academic lives. Dana mentions a troubling past involving a disastrous affair with a professor, setting a darker tone for her character.

Curt, Jules' boyfriend, makes an entrance by throwing a football that inadvertently flies out of a window. Holden, a new acquaintance, catches it, leading to an introduction that hints at a budding romance with Dana amidst the group's preparation for their weekend getaway.
