Haunted by the traumatic loss of her mother in a house fire, Anna Ivers attempts suicide as a desperate act of escape from her pain. This tragic event marks the beginning of her long and grueling ten-month stay in a psychiatric hospital.

After spending ten months in treatment, Anna is finally released from the psychiatric hospital. Despite her liberation, she remains troubled by recurring nightmares that stem from the night of her mother's death.

Upon returning home, Anna reconnects with her older sister Alex, finding solace in their shared grief. However, the sisters are soon troubled by the presence of their father's new partner, Rachel, who was previously their mother's live-in nurse.

Anna and Alex begin to theorize that Anna's nightmares might be a warning from their deceased mother, suggesting that Rachel is responsible for her demise. Their suspicion grows, particularly because they feel their father’s decision during their mother's illness was selfish.

Anna's boyfriend, Matt, shares that he witnessed the events surrounding her mother's fire, providing her with insight into that tragic night. However, their discussion is cut short by Rachel, reigniting Anna's fears regarding her intentions.

The police take Anna into custody following the tragic events. As she is returned to the mental institution, she encounters another patient who is revealed to be the real Mildred Kemp, leaving Anna to grapple with the chilling truths of her past.
