The Ugly Dachshund

Fran Garrison Suzanne Pleshette and her husband Mark Garrison Dean Jones are a young, happily married couple who proudly care for Danke, an award-winning dachshund who has stolen their hearts. The day they rush to the county hospital, Danke is about to welcome a litter of pups, and the excitement quickly spirals into a comic sequence of near-disasters and good luck. Along the way, Officer Carmody Kelly Thordsen pulls them over for speeding, only to clear the way when he learns Fran is in labor and to escort them to the vet, turning a stressful moment into a roadside rescue.

At the veterinary clinic, Dr. J. L. Pruitt Charles Ruggles confirms Danke’s labor while sharing the news that his own female Great Dane, Duchess, has just given birth too. Duchess, however, has neglected one male puppy for milk reasons, and Dr. Pruitt gently suggests bringing that fragile pup home to be cared for. Mark agrees to take the male pup, and a few days later, Fran notices an extra surprise in their home—though she suspects nothing about the new arrival’s origin. Mark finally opens up to Fran, and they name the stray male Brutus, setting the stage for an unusual family dynamic.

Brutus grows up among the dachshunds and begins to adopt their distinctive low-to-the-ground gait and playful mischief. The household is derailed by a string of capers: the dachshunds tear Danke’s sweater, Mark’s studio gets splashed with paint, Fran’s bed is toppled, and Sergeant Carmody finds himself chased up a tree when Brutus mistakes him for a burglar. A garden party is chaos when the caterers mistake Brutus for a lion, yet Fran’s disbelief about the dogs’ involvement keeps the peace at first.

Everything changes when Brutus saves Fran’s favorite puppy, Chloe, from a passing garbage truck, and her skepticism softens into grateful acceptance. The couple then enters their dogs in a show, where Brutus encounters other Great Danes and, notably, a female Harlequin Great Dane. He stands at attention and earns recognition, ultimately winning two blue ribbons. For a moment, Brutus experiences what it is like to be a Great Dane, earning respect from the dachshunds and proving that he belongs in their world.

The winning moment softens their competitive streak and helps them see a simpler path: rather than chasing further accolades, Mark and Fran decide to lean into the joy and warmth of their close-knit, if unlikely, canine family. Brutus’s presence redefines their bond, transforming a lighthearted domestic comedy into a story about love, loyalty, and the surprising ways animals shape family life.
