The Thursday Murder Club

At the Coopers Chase retirement village, the Thursday Murder Club begins meeting weekly to discuss old cold cases. The group is led by psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif, former trade unionist Ron Ritchie, and enigmatic Elizabeth Best, who cultivate a shared curiosity and dry wit.

Joyce, a retired nurse and new resident, is welcomed into the club. Her medical knowledge proves useful, giving the investigations a practical perspective and deepened empathy for witnesses.

The club is inspired by a case handled in 1973 by Detective Inspector Penny Gray, centering on the unsolved murder of Angela Hughes. Penny Gray is now comatose in hospice, making the past mystery feel personal and pressing for the TMC.

Police Constable Donna De Freitas visits the village and quickly befriends the TMC. She brings fresh eyes and practical police experience to their informal inquiry.

Plans to redevelop Coopers Chase into luxury flats spark conflict among residents. Ian Ventham pushes the project forward while Tony Curran opposes it, vowing to block any sale.

Shortly after the dispute over redevelopment, Tony Curran is murdered in his own home. The house is ransacked and the murder weapon is missing, heightening the stakes for the TMC.

With Donna's help, the club learns that local crime boss Bobby Tanner is secretly connected to the scheme and thought dead years earlier. They also uncover that Ron's son Jason had previously worked with Tony Curran.

During a residents' protest, Ian Ventham collapses and dies from a fentanyl overdose, leaving Bobby Tanner as the sole owner of Coopers Chase. The death shifts the focus of the investigation.

Jason is arrested, though the evidence against him is weak. He reveals an alibi involving an affair with Ian's estranged wife Gemma, which leads the TMC to re-examine the case.

Elizabeth grows closer to Bogdan, who discovers a hidden grave containing Peter Mercer’s remains, the key witness from Angela Hughes’ murder. Elizabeth also starts receiving threats to back off.

Bogdan confesses that he killed Tony under pressure, though he claims it was not intentional. His confession is secretly recorded by Stephen, and Bogdan is arrested. He says he only wanted his passport back to return to Poland.

The TMC conclude that Peter Mercer killed Angela Hughes, but Penny secretly took justice into her own hands by killing Mercer and concealing his body. Later, Penny's husband John murders Mercer to protect Penny, a chilling turn for the couple’s story. Penny and John die soon after in hospice care, implying a fentanyl-fueled murder–suicide.

At Penny's funeral, Elizabeth presents Penny's club necklace to Joyce, formally welcoming her as a full member of the TMC. The gesture seals Joyce's place in the group and signals a new generation stepping in.

With the truth revealed and the danger receding, Coopers Chase is put up for sale again. Joyce's daughter Joanna considers buying the village, hinting at fresh beginnings for the community.

Life in the village quietly resumes, with old friendships renewed and the TMC ready to tackle whatever mystery may come next. The residents find a sense of normalcy as the club looks to the future.
