Mack the Knife, a roguish gang leader, secretly weds the daughter of beggar king Peachum. When Peachum learns of the marriage, he commands Police Chief Brown to apprehend and hang Macheath, fearing the Soho beggars will sabotage an imminent coronation. The story unfolds in a stylized, gritty London underworld.
