The Three Musketeers - Part 2: Milady

The story unfolds in the aftermath of The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, where our courageous protagonist, D’Artagnan, finds himself under the control of agents working for Gaston after being ambushed and knocked unconscious. Proving himself a resilient swordsman, D’Artagnan escapes his captors and enacts his revenge by capturing the Comte de Chalais, a loyal henchman to Gaston. In a shocking turn of events, D’Artagnan commands de Chalais to lead him to the cell holding Constance, only to find it occupied by none other than Milady. Her battered form and chains highlight the severity of her mistreatment. Demonstrating his heroism, D’Artagnan chooses to free Milady from her captors, and the two make a daring escape into the protective embrace of a nearby forest.

As the night progresses, Milady’s seductive intentions become blatantly apparent as she seeks to enchant D’Artagnan with her legendary beauty. However, D’Artagnan’s steadfast resolve remains unbroken, prompting Milady to vanish into the shadows. Soon after, D’Artagnan encounters trouble again, recaptured by de Chalais’ forces, but quick thinking and exceptional swordsmanship pave his way to freedom once more.

Meanwhile, Athos visits his ancestral home, where he shares a heartfelt moment with his five-year-old son and pays his respects at his wife’s grave. This emotional sequence serves as a poignant reminder of the toll that war takes on personal relationships and families.

Driven by rage and the urge for vengeance, King Louis XIII embarks on a full-scale attack on La Rochelle, while D’Artagnan and his comrades unite with the Musketeers, an elite faction of the French army led by the courageous Captain Treville. In a surprising encounter, D’Artagnan is faced again by Milady; this time, her allure is underscored by a cryptic intensity. It soon becomes clear to him when he notices a fleur-de-lis branding on her shoulder that she is indeed the former wife of Athos and the mother of his son.

This revelation throws D’Artagnan into turmoil as he grapples with his burgeoning feelings for Milady amidst the swirling chaos. Tension mounts when a group of Musketeers, under Captain Treville’s command, begins a risky night raid on La Rochelle, only to be ambushed by Protestant rebels who appear to have been tipped off by none other than de Chalais.

Thanks to the resourcefulness of Hannibal, the leader of another French troop, the Musketeers manage to evade disaster, emerging victorious against formidable odds. As peace returns, Athos traces Milady to a hidden glade where she holds a clandestine meeting with Cardinal Richelieu.

The cardinal tasks Milady with a crucial assassination mission, one that could sway the tide of war and determine the fate of La Rochelle. Athos confronts her, but Milady remains resolute, intent on fulfilling her dangerous assignment. Just when all seems bleak, D’Artagnan and Aramis arrive, intervening at the last moment to save Athos from certain doom. Back in the royal court, Cardinal Richelieu seeks to make amends with Queen Anne, assuring her of Constance’s release, who has found refuge under the care of the Duke of Buckingham in England. Meanwhile, Benjamin, Athos’ brother and a pivotal Protestant leader, falls victim to Gaston’s thugs and faces a grim fate. With determination, Athos opts to abandon the French army, risking everything to rescue his brother, joined by Aramis and D’Artagnan for a daring escape to England.

While Milady plots to assassinate the Duke of Buckingham within his castle, Constance recognizes her and has her taken into custody. In a remarkable act of charity, Constance exchanges her attire with Milady, securing her escape while bravely stepping into the gallows in her place. Tragically, as the executioners come for Milady, Constance’s pleas go unheard, leading to her untimely demise. D’Artagnan and his allies narrowly miss witnessing this heart-wrenching event but pursue Milady as she ignites Buckingham’s palace in flames. Determined, D’Artagnan confronts her amidst the blaze, ultimately prevailing but losing consciousness, only to be saved by his loyal friends.

As Captain Treville faces treason charges in the King’s court, Aramis and D’Artagnan present damning evidence exposing Gaston’s secret collusion with La Rochelle’s rebels. This revelation absolves Treville, restoring his honor. Meanwhile, Athos returns home only to find that his son has been abducted by an unseen foe, leaving behind a mysterious earring that once belonged to his wife, plunging him into a new wave of uncertainty and grief.
