Plot Summary
After Cardinal Mazarin’s death, a power vacuum threatens France. Young Louis XIV vows to rule, while finance minister Colbert reveals Fouquet’s treasury thefts and ambition. Fouquet bribes Louis’s mistress; she denounces him, causing his arrest. Louis and Colbert craft a policy that keeps merchants profitable, urban poor employed, peasants untaxed.
