Krabat, a beggar boy, is lured to a mill run by a cruel one‑eyed sorcerer who takes him as an apprentice. With other boys he works there, learning black magic in the sorcerer's grim mill, a place of fear where they are bound to the master. Each Christmas a boy must duel the master, who alone can wield the secret spell Koraktor, making the challenger hopeless.
