The Smurfs 2 (2013) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Smurfette wrote the formula because she felt sorry for the Naughties (Vexy and Hackus), who were suffering from a lack of Smurf essence. Gargamel tricked her by presenting the Naughties as innocent victims, and when she saw them in distress, she reluctantly complied with his demands to help them.

Gargamel was too large to fit through the magical portal he created using the Eiffel Tower as a conduit. This is why he had to send Vexy, one of the Naughties, to infiltrate the Smurf Village and kidnap Smurfette instead.

Patrick and Victor destroyed the Smurfalator machine in a direct attack while the Smurfs were trapped inside. Their destruction of the machine caused a massive explosion of stored Smurf essence, which simultaneously erased the written formula and freed the captured Smurfs.

After Smurfette wrote down the Smurf creation formula, Gargamel used it to transform the Naughties into genuine Smurfs. However, he immediately trapped them in the Smurfalator to extract their essence, revealing his true intentions.

Smurfette empathized with the Naughties because she saw herself in them - both were created by Gargamel with evil intentions but wanted to be good. When she saw them suffering from lack of essence, her desire to help others like herself led her to write down the formula.

When Patrick and Victor destroyed the Smurfalator, it released all the stored Smurf essence in a powerful explosion. This massive burst of magical energy incinerated the paper containing the Smurf creation formula that Smurfette had written, preventing Gargamel from using it again.

Gargamel originally gave Smurfette a tiny dragon wand as a deceptive gift to gain her trust. After the Smurfalator explosion freed everyone, Smurfette used this same wand to deflect Gargamel's attack and defeat him, turning his own weapon against him.

Papa Smurf originally intended to send Brainy, Hefty, and Gutsy to New York for the rescue mission. However, an accident with the magical crystals caused Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to accidentally use them instead, so they ended up being the ones who traveled to the Winslows.

Smurfette was troubled because she was originally created by Gargamel as a weapon meant to destroy the Smurfs. Although Papa Smurf transformed her into a good Smurf, she still struggled with whether she truly belonged and feared her past made her fundamentally different from the other Smurfs.

Smurf essence is the fundamental magical energy that fuels Gargamel's spells and tricks. After becoming a famous magician in Paris, he was running low on this essential resource, which is why he invented the Naughties as a way to capture essence without directly confronting the Smurfs.
