The Silent Village

The sequence closes with a title card that compares life in Cwmgiedd to life in Lidice before the arrival of Fascism, underscoring the film’s parallel between a peaceful village and a town under threat.

When the occupation begins, a black car arrives, its loudspeaker blaring political slogans and marching music. The film gradually reveals the occupation through a stark, suggestive soundscape—boots marching, distant gunfire, and the sharp, officious orders that cut through the community’s daily routines. This approach, a refined form of Jennings’ sound-as-narrative technique first seen in Listen to Britain, foregrounds how noise and order erode personal and communal identity. The Welsh language and cultural life come under pressure: Welsh is no longer permitted as the medium of instruction in schools, trade unions are banned, and public life tightens under surveillance. Yet the villagers resist in quiet, organized ways, including the publication of a Welsh-language news sheet. Over time, even singing Welsh hymns in the chapel becomes illegal, marking a narrowing of space for cultural expression and solidarity.

The film draws a stark, chilling parallel to Lidice through its most brutal act of reprisal. As in that raid, children are marched from school and join the women as they are loaded onto trucks, while the men stand defiantly in front of the village churchyard. The men’s chorus rises in a powerful, if fragile, resistance as they are led away, their voices echoing a stubborn pride in their homeland.

The sequence emphasizes how a community’s everyday life—its language, rituals, and social bonds—can be destabilized by occupation and violence. The narrative maintains a patient, observational tone while steadily revealing the impact of authoritarian rule on family life, education, and faith. Throughout, the film sustains a careful balance between the intimate textures of Welsh village life and the outward, insistent force of fascist oppression.
