Colonel Kimber dismissed De Brand after he was the sole survivor of a brutal massacre where mercenaries were speared to death and a French journalist was assaulted. Kimber cited De Brand's lack of leadership as the reason, appointing Captain Lauderwood to lead the patrol instead, believing he was more capable of handling the dangerous mission to retrieve the documents.

De Brand's failure as a leader is established early when Kimber rebukes him, setting up the tension around Lauderwood's leadership.

The documents left in the Simba village contain detailed information about who is funding and coordinating the mercenary activities during the Simba uprising, including payment records. Retrieving them would expose the mercenary network and potentially shift the political tide of the war in the government's favor.

Carrès was hired for his intimate knowledge of the local terrain, including swamp and desert routes, as well as his familiarity with Simba networks. Despite his controversial background selling weapons to the enemy, his expertise was considered essential for navigating hostile territory and completing the mission within the four-day deadline.

The film establishes early that Carrès knows the area's rough edges from his previous dealings with the Simbas.

Carrès turned to selling weapons after witnessing his wife being tortured and killed. His alienation intensified when the French government refused to prosecute those responsible for her death. This personal trauma hardened him and pushed him into the mercenary world.

The four-day deadline was imposed because the documents contained sensitive information about mercenary operations. The urgency stemmed from the political need to recover these papers before the Simbas could use them or before the exposure became irrelevant. This tight timeframe created constant pressure on every decision the patrol made.

Wooder, a female mercenary doctor, was recruited to provide medical care for the team throughout the dangerous mission. Her expertise was considered essential given the likelihood of injuries from ambushes, harsh terrain, and combat. Her presence added a crucial support element to the diverse patrol.

The opening sequence establishes the extreme brutality of the Congo Crisis, showing the spearing of captured mercenaries and the assault on the French journalist. This prologue sets the harrowing tone for the entire film and demonstrates the lethal environment the Red Berets will operate in.

Kimber selected Lauderwood because he believed De Brand had proven inadequate leadership. Although Lauderwood was not from the original unit, Kimber had confidence in his abilities to handle the difficult mission of recovering the documents and rescuing the journalist within the tight deadline.
