Geologist Kristian Eikjord is hailed as a hero for his actions during the tsunami that devastated Geiranger. In the aftermath, three years pass and his personal life unravels: his wife Idun Karlsen is divorcing him, and he remains estranged from their children, Sondre Eikjord and Julia Eikjord. Kristian keeps his distance in a rebuilt Geiranger, while Idun builds a new life in Oslo, working at the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel. The rift within the family grows as Kristian carries a private burden—a secret room in his home devoted to the tragedy and its victims—creating tension at every turn.
The story widens when Kristian learns of the death of fellow geologist Konrad Lindblom in a collapse inside the Oslofjord Tunnel. He travels to Oslo to probe the circumstances behind Konrad’s death and seeks answers from Konrad’s supervisor, Johannes Løberg. Johannes parts with excessive concern, insisting that the seismic activity Konrad feared was nothing more than construction blasting across the city. Yet Kristian cannot shake his doubts, and the seeds of a looming catastrophe take deeper root.
In Oslo, Kristian visits Konrad’s house and meets Konrad’s daughter, Marit Lindblom. There, he uncovers Konrad’s research—core samples and a map marked with alarming seismic readings—that deepens his concern. He calls Johannes to share what he’s found, but the supervisor downplays the discoveries, urging caution and restraint.
Kristian’s search takes a personal turn when he visits Idun, where he reconnects with Sondre and meets his girlfriend, and he is invited to watch Julia perform in a ballet recital. The next day, Kristian uncovers more troubling findings at Konrad’s house and heads toward the Oslofjord Tunnel, determined to recover a crucial core sample Konrad was pursuing. En route, he accidentally snaps the sample, revealing that the earth beneath Oslo is unnaturically fragile.
Then disaster strikes in a spectacular, public way: a seismic rift tears through the city and destroys the Oslo Opera House where Julia is performing. Idun manages to get Julia out of the building, and the two survive the initial quake, while Kristian, haunted by the threat of a city-wide catastrophe, confronts his own limits. That night, he seeks solace with Idun; their reconciliation is intense, and they share a moment of vulnerability that underscored how fragile their relationship had become.
The next morning brings new urgency. Idun leaves for work and Sondre heads to the University of Oslo, while Marit discovers a video on Konrad’s computer that reveals he had been using rats to test his theories, and that those rats died from exposure to toxic gas. Kristian interprets this as a grim omen: a major earthquake—potentially up to 8.5 on the Richter scale—threatens Oslo, and Konrad’s collapse appears only as a warning sign. Determined to warn Idun and the others, Kristian, Marit, and Julia rush to the Radisson Blu to alert Idun.
On the way, Kristian reaches out to Sondre to warn him, but Sondre—busy with class—ignores the calls. In a desperate bid to evacuate, Kristian orchestrates a fake bomb threat to trigger a city-wide evacuation, prompting the University to empty and forcing Sondre to leave with his peers.
The group converges on the hotel just as the tremors intensify. Kristian finds Idun on the 34th floor and convinces her to head downstairs, pulling the fire alarm to move everyone to safety before taking the elevator with Idun. Julia wanders into the lobby searching for her father, with Marit close behind. Marit races up the stairs and finally reaches Julia, pulling her to safety as the earthquake rips through the building.
The elevator carriage carrying Kristian and Idun plunges toward the lower floors, only to be brought to a violent halt. After they regain consciousness, they climb the maintenance ladders to reach the top of the shaft. Debris and aftershocks shake loose, injuring Idun’s leg and forcing Kristian to shoulder the burden of carrying her to safety. They reach an open elevator door near the 30th story and attempt a daring swing across using a severed elevator cord, a move Kristian manages to complete—yet Idun is tragically killed when the power fails and the brakes on the elevator above them fail.
Kristian presses on to find Julia, who is in danger on a cracking window. He and Marit rescue Julia just before the glass gives way, and the trio makes their escape from the hotel amid the chaos. In the wake of the disaster, Marit returns to Konrad’s office and discovers it largely destroyed, save for a photograph of herself as a child with her father.
The curtain finally falls on a nation on edge: Kristian, Julia, and Sondre return to their old home in Geiranger, while the closing notes explain that Norway sits atop substantial seismic activity north of the Alps. A major earthquake is anticipated to strike Norway in the foreseeable future, leaving the characters with an unsettled sense of what comes next and a stark reminder of the fragile balance between human endeavor and the power of the earth.
