The Pagan Queen

Following the death of her father, Krok, Libuše is elected as the new ruler of the Bohemian tribes. She leads her people with her visionary abilities, supported by her sisters Kazi and Teta, and her warrior friend Vlasta. Her leadership marks the beginning of her reign and the forging of a new society.

As a seer, Libuše travels into the Otherworld, the land of the dead, and returns with prophecies about the future. She provides guidance and answers to her people, strengthening her role as a spiritual leader. Her visions help shape the future of her growing community.

Libuše envisions the city of Prague along the Vltava River, laying the foundations for its future as a major settlement. She also initiates mining in the Bohemian mountains, contributing to the economic prosperity of her realm. These decisions demonstrate her forward-thinking leadership.

Libuše helps her farmers combat a deadly plague that threatens their livelihood. She uses her influence and healing abilities to support her people through this crisis, reinforcing her role as both a leader and healer.

Libuše begins a clandestine romantic relationship with Přemysl, a charismatic ploughman. Their affair symbolizes her connection to the common people and adds complexity to her reign. This relationship influences the future political landscape.

The peaceful community is attacked by raiders, causing factions among the farmers and landowners. Power-hungry chieftains Domaslav and Vrsovec manipulate these divisions, threatening stability in the realm. Libuše faces growing internal conflict.

Given her people's demand, Libuše marries Přemysl and crowns him king. His rule soon turns oppressive, as he enslaves the formerly free farmers, leading to unrest and resistance. This marks a turning point in her leadership and the kingdom’s future.

Vlasta, Libuše's childhood friend and lover, refuses to accept Přemysl’s rule. She mobilizes her maiden army to fight against the men of Bohemia, resulting in violent clashes. Her rebellion signifies the fight for freedom and justice.

During the conflict, Vlasta kills Ctirad, a popular warrior, and Domaslav is blinded. Přemysl confronts Vlasta in a final showdown, ultimately killing her, which symbolizes the brutal struggle for power and the loss of innocence. Libuše’s leadership is challenged greatly.

Libuše gives birth to Přemysl's son, Nezamysl, representing the continuation of their lineage. Her reign is marked by complex political struggles, but her legacy as a visionary leader endures. Her enduring influence is emblematic of the founding myth of Prague.

The film concludes with Libuše diving into the Vltava River, symbolizing her transition from mortal ruler to legend. Her self-sacrifice cements her status as a mythic figure in Czech history and folklore.
