The Olsen Gang in a Fix (1969) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Olsen Gang in a Fix (1969), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

After a tremendously daring—or at least badly planned and utterly unsuccessful—attempt to rob a savings bank, Egon Olsen is jailed. When released, he has been rehabilitated by the pretty social worker Bodil Hansen and lands a steady job at a toy factory, hoping to prove he can be a lawful citizen. Despite objections from Benny Frandsen and Kjeld Jensen, Egon sets his sights on a clean life.

Although it starts well for the group, they are drawn back toward crime when they are accused of a robbery carried out in front of them in the vault of the Danish National Bank, where they work as cleaners after a factory mishap. Police believe the gang committed the robbery, but the truth is that the mafia boss Serafimo ‘Spats’ Motzarella arrived with a team to rob the vault and plant the loot, allegedly the Danish crown jewels, in a cello case. The jewels on display at Rosenborg Castle are copies, while the originals were to be secretly sold to relieve the economy.

The gang must clear their names by recovering the jewels. They hijack the cello case from the airport as the criminals try to flee, only for the mob to track them back to their residence, a bar in Copenhagen, which is blown to pieces as the cello case is repossessed. Through disguises and diversions, they outsmart the gangsters and reclaim the cello case, but now they are wanted not only by the gangsters but also by the officious detective Mortensen.

A long car chase and a lucky escape lead them to recruit Benny’s heavily alcohol-using brother, Dynamite Harry, an explosives expert, to open the cello case at a remote gravel pit. Unbeknownst to them, Motzarella arrives from New York with a German task force to wipe out the gang and recapture the jewels. Meanwhile, Bodil tracks Motzarella, partly to test rehabilitation and partly to uncover Egon’s involvement in the alleged bank coup.

Harry’s attempt to blow the lid off the cello case accidentally blows up the Germans instead. The cello case remains unopened, and Egon grows increasingly frustrated. Motzarella arrives in a helicopter, accompanied by Bodil. The gang hands over the cello case to Motzarella, who arranges a legal sale of the jewels; Bodil follows him back to the States.

Back home, Benny and Kjeld return to find Yvonne, who—with Bodil’s help—has managed to restore their fortunes. Feeling vindicated, Egon strolls into a bar only to face Mortensen, who arrests him after listing a string of petty crimes tied to the jewel hunt. Egon is jailed once more.

Q1

Why does Egon temporarily abandon his criminal schemes?

A.

Egon is released from prison after his failed bank robbery attempt and is rehabilitated by Bodil Hansen, an attractive social welfare officer. She helps him find a steady job at a toy factory, and he genuinely tries to prove he can live as a law-abiding citizen. This change of heart is short-lived once the gang is falsely accused of the bank vault robbery.

The film opens with Egon's failed robbery attempt, establishing his criminal pattern before his attempted reformation.

Q2

Who actually robbed the Danish National Bank vault?

A.

The robbery was carried out by mafia boss Serafimo 'Spats' Motzarella and his team. They planted the stolen loot, allegedly the Danish crown jewels, in a cello case to smuggle it out of the country. The gang happened to be working as cleaners at the bank during the heist, which is why police mistakenly blamed them.

Q3

Why are Egon and his gang accused of a robbery they didn't commit?

A.

The gang was working as cleaners at the Danish National Bank when Motzarella's mob robbed the vault. Since they were on-site and had criminal histories, police immediately assumed they were responsible. The real perpetrators escaped while the gang was left holding the blame, forcing them to clear their names.

Q4

What was Motzarella's actual plan with the crown jewels?

A.

Motzarella's plan was to secretly sell the Danish crown jewels to relieve the Danish economy. The jewels on public display at Rosenborg Castle were actually copies, while the originals were stolen from the vault and hidden in a cello case for illegal export. The gang got caught in the middle of this larger criminal operation.

Q5

Why did the mob blow up the Copenhagen bar?

A.

After the gang hijacked the cello case from the airport, Motzarella's mob tracked them to their Copenhagen hideout, a bar. During the confrontation, the mob opened fire and the bar was destroyed as the cello case was repossessed. The gang survived and later used disguises to reclaim the case.

Q6

Why did the gang recruit Dynamite Harry to open the cello case?

A.

The gang needed to open the cello case to prove they had the real crown jewels and clear their names. Since the case was securely locked, they recruited Dynamite Harry, Benny's heavy-drinking brother who was an explosives expert, to blow it open at a remote gravel pit.

Q7

What happened when Dynamite Harry tried to open the cello case?

A.

Harry's attempt to blow open the cello case backfired catastrophically. Instead of opening the case, the explosion took out the German task force that Motzarella had brought along. The cello case remained unopened, leaving the gang frustrated and the jewel mystery unresolved.

What happens to Bodil Hansen after the jewel deal?

A.

Q10

Why is Egon arrested at the end even though he didn't rob the bank?

A.

While Egon clears his name of the original bank robbery, he is arrested for a string of petty crimes he committed during the jewel hunt, hijacking, disguise scams, and other offenses. Detective Mortensen catches up with him at a bar and arrests him for these lesser charges, sending Egon back to jail.

The film begins and ends with Egon in prison, creating a circular narrative structure.
