What Happens in The Last Exploits of the Olsen Gang: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Last Exploits of the Olsen Gang (1974) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

After their last heist, Egon Olsen and the Olsen Gang head to Majorca with no money, the loot having accidentally burned up when Benny Frandsen and Kjeld Jensen tossed it out the window to shake the police off their trail. Back in Denmark, Egon is released from prison; Kjeld and Benny are waiting, but the events in Spain have left him wary, and he detaches from them. He has been hired by a Stock Broker Holm Hansen to open a safe in Switzerland belonging to his deceased associate. Egon demands 25% of the value of the safe's contents, and Holm Hansen agrees, but a Swiss henchman betrays him, leaving Egon at the mercy of the authorities. Egon escapes and returns to Denmark, where he reunites with Benny and Kjeld and hatches a new plan to reclaim payment and settle old scores. The safe in question contains the Bedford Diamonds, a legendary collection of jewels coveted as an inflation-proof investment and pursued by police around the world.

Holm Hansen sells the diamonds to an Arabian Oil Sheikh for 15 million dollars. The gang devises a bold, theatrical heist: a boat, a bus, and a hundred balloons to lift the diamonds into their hands, all under the noses of the Sheikh and his police escort. Egon, however, knows the diamonds cannot be legally sold, so his aim is to extort half of the 15 million from Holm Hansen, only to be foiled by Yvonne Jensen, who has hidden the real diamonds and replaced them with worthless keepsakes. Holm Hansen decides that Egon must be eliminated, and orders his henchman Bøffen to make him disappear.

Bøffen captures Egon and tries to drown him in the Copenhagen harbor, but Benny and Kjeld arrive just in time to save him. With his life in the balance, Egon finally unveils a plan: Benny and Kjeld don disguises as police officers, while Egon pretends to be a captive. The trio confronts Holm Hansen, and while he is distracted by Benny, Egon and Kjeld execute their reversal—opening the safe and swapping the 15 million for the diamonds. Realizing he has been outsmarted, Holm Hansen calls the real police, only to find the Bedford Diamonds in his possession, and he is arrested. The gang then escapes to Majorca with the money, bringing their long-running caper to its inflation-proof finale.

The Last Exploits of the Olsen Gang Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Last Exploits of the Olsen Gang (1974): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did the Olsen Gang go to Majorca with no money?

The gang traveled to Majorca after their last heist had failed. While escaping from the police, Benny and Kjeld accidentally threw the loot out the window to evade capture, not realizing they were discarding their entire fortune. The money burned up in the process, leaving them penniless in Spain.

Foreshadowing: Earlier heists always ended with the gang just barely escaping, establishing their pattern of poor luck with money.

Q2

Why did Egon abandon Benny and Kjeld after returning to Denmark?

When Egon was released from prison in Denmark, he deliberately distanced himself from Benny and Kjeld. The traumatic experience in Spain, where his partners accidentally destroyed the loot, made him wary of relying on them again. He chose to pursue a lucrative solo job offered by stock broker Holm Hansen instead of reuniting with his old gang.

Foreshadowing: Egon's distrust stems from the repeated failures caused by his partners' incompetence throughout previous films.

Q3

What are the Bedford Diamonds and why are they valuable?

The Bedford Diamonds are a legendary collection of jewels hidden in a Swiss safe belonging to Holm Hansen's deceased associate. They are described as an inflation-proof investment, making them highly desirable to wealthy collectors worldwide. Holm Hansen sold them to an Arabian Oil Sheikh for 15 million dollars, attracting international police attention.

Q4

Why was Egon double-crossed in Switzerland?

Egon demanded a 25% share of the safe's contents for his work. Holm Hansen initially agreed, but his Swiss henchman betrayed Egon by leaving him at the mercy of the Swiss authorities. This double-cross was orchestrated by Holm Hansen himself, who had no intention of paying Egon fairly for his services.

Foreshadowing: The safe job was always risky since it relied on a criminal client's honesty.

Q5

How did the gang steal the diamonds from the Sheikh?

The gang devised an elaborate scheme using a boat, a bus, and one hundred balloons to lift the diamonds from the Sheikh's convoy. The theatrical operation was executed right under the noses of the Sheikh and his police escort. The plan succeeded in physically taking the diamonds, though it was ultimately a temporary victory.

Q6

Why did Yvonne swap the real diamonds with worthless items?

Yvonne Jensen, Kjeld's wife, hid the real diamonds and replaced them with worthless keepsakes to prevent the gang from getting caught with the stolen jewels. Her quick thinking derailed Egon's plan to extort half of the 15 million from Holm Hansen, as the diamonds he was trying to use as leverage were worthless fakes.

Foreshadowing: Yvonne has consistently shown herself to be smarter than the gang in previous films.

Q7

Why did Holm Hansen want Egon eliminated?

After Egon's extortion plan failed due to Yvonne's diamond swap, Holm Hansen concluded that Egon was too dangerous to leave alive. How did the final police disguise plan work?

Egon pretended to be a captive while Benny and Kjeld disguised themselves as police officers. When they confronted Holm Hansen, he was distracted by the fake police presence. While he was busy realizing the officers were imposters, Egon and Kjeld opened the safe and switched the 15 million dollars with the hidden diamonds, framing Holm Hansen for possession of the stolen jewels.

Why did Holm Hansen end up arrested instead of the gang?

When Holm Hansen called the real police to report the intruders, the diamonds were found in his possession. With the evidence against him and the gang escaped, Holm Hansen was arrested while the Olsen Gang fled to Majorca with the money.
