The New Adventures of Little Toot

Captain Dogwood sent Andy and Tina to the lifeboat to keep them safe. With his ship taking on water and the storm growing increasingly dangerous, he chose to prioritize his children's survival by having them ride out the night in the lifeboat while he remained aboard his own vessel.

Little Toot was once the busiest and proudest tugboat in the harbor, but when boats no longer needed his services, he fell into disrepair. Without work, he sank into the mud and dirt, eventually becoming a neglected vessel that no one wanted.

The opening scenes establish a theme of abandonment and neglect that Little Toot personally relates to.

The three cats living on Little Toot were obsessed with retrieving a shipment of sardines that Captain Dogwood was delivering. Their entire motivation throughout the journey was to get these sardines, which they craved badly enough to threaten the puppies and eventually tie their boat to Dogwood's vessel to search the kitchen.

The cats' threat to throw the pups overboard and feed them to a shark reveals their selfish priorities from the start.

Typhoon Tessie claimed she creates storms because it's her job, a job she insists she must have to keep the world changing. She warned the crew that her winds and storms would continue unless they accepted that meteorology is her domain, essentially claiming authority over the weather as part of her role.

When lava blocked their path, Little Toot came up with an innovative solution. He packed his mouth with bubblegum and blew a massive bubble that lifted the entire crew, along with the tied vessels, over the molten lava flow. They safely landed on the other side of the barrier.

The earlier scene where the crew gathers bubble gum and ice cream for the journey plants the solution for this escape.

Captain Dogwood had tossed the sardines overboard during his shipwreck to lighten the load on his vessel. This explained why the cats found nothing when they searched his ship, leading to their disappointment at the end of the movie.

The cats' obsessive search for sardines throughout the journey makes this reveal even more comedic.

As the crew approached Skull Rocks, the cats' boat sank beneath the waves. Echo called out to Little Toot to ride the surf, and Toot used the waves to pull everyone through the dangerous rocks. The raging sea suddenly calmed just in time for them to reach safety.

Percy's Perfect Purple Pickle Pelican Pellets were Salty the Seagull's favorite snack that he insisted on retrieving before continuing the journey. The pickle pellets became a running joke throughout the film, with Salty fiercely guarding his stash even in the midst of chaos.

The cats feared both water and adult dogs, which is why the puppies initially used this to scare them off Little Toot. Once the cats realized the threats came from puppies and not grown dogs, they regained their courage. The crew ultimately used water from Toot's hose, something cats notoriously hate, to drive them away for good.

The plan to use the puppies to scare the cats only works until the cats realize they're just puppies.

Little Toot started the journey feeling useless after being abandoned and no longer needed by other boats. Through helping rescue Captain Dogwood's puppies, surviving the storm, navigating Skull Rocks, and escaping the volcano with his bubblegum solution, he regained his sense of purpose. At the end, he declares he will never feel sorry for himself again.

Salty's speech about standing firm and being there for the crew helps spark Toot's transformation.
