When a close friend is in desperate need of money, a confident merchant secures a loan from the merciless money‑lender Shylock, wagering a pound of flesh from his own flesh if his ships fail to return with riches. Believing his fleet will soon bring wealth, he readily accepts the harsh terms, placing himself and his loved ones in grave peril.
