John Mitchell lives a double life as a devoted husband and a test pilot in Wolverhampton. He disappoints Mary by refusing to raise their house bid from £3,500 to £4,000, citing affordability. Unknown to Mary, the aircraft firm itself is teetering on bankruptcy, adding pressure to his everyday routine.

At the factory, owner Reginald Conway must secure a big order to stave off bankruptcy. Ashmore visits and indicates he is close to committing, but only if the prototype proves its worth. The future of Mitchell's job—and many others—hangs on a single test flight.
