In a crumbling Hollywood Hills mansion steeped in the relics of an African‑traveling anthropologist, two sisters navigate a fragile equilibrium between love and obsession. Ellen Carpenter, a disciplined astronomer whose career thrives in the clear logic of the night sky, returns to the inherited house seeking stability after years away in Los Angeles. She brings with her a pragmatic mindset and a cautious yearning for connection, yet the very walls of the home pulse with the untamed spirit of her late father’s expeditions.

Her sister Cissy lives in a markedly different rhythm. Childlike in demeanor and haunted by an unsettling intensity, she surrounds herself with a menagerie of “mafus” — exotic primates locked in a towering cage that dominates the living room. The cage, a constant reminder of their father’s unorthodox studies, becomes both a sanctuary and a prison for Cissy’s imagination. Her world teeters between tender devotion to her sister and a growing, inexplicable fixation on the animal companions, casting a shadow of unease over the household’s everyday rituals.

When a gentle suitor, David Eastman, a colleague from the Griffith Observatory, enters Ellen’s life, the delicate balance of the sisters’ relationship is subtly tested.
