In those days, Liu Bei’s family, including his concubine Qi Lan, stay within Cao Cao’s base alongside Guan Yu. Cao Cao showers Guan Yu with precious gifts and tokens of favor, hoping to convince him to stay by his side. Yet Guan Yu remains steadfast, refusing to renounce his vow to Liu Bei. When he learns that Liu Bei has sought shelter under Yuan Shao, Guan Yu negotiates with Cao Cao to secure the release of Liu Bei’s family. Cao Cao agrees, but Qi Lan remains behind with Guan Yu, a constant reminder of a possible personal future that could pull him away from Cao Cao’s orbit.

Cao Cao, always a strategist, senses the way Guan Yu’s heart leans and hatches a cruel test. He arranges a ploy—using Guan Yu’s hidden affection for Qi Lan as leverage—to force a confession that might sever Guan Yu’s loyalties. He defeats Kong Xiu, Han Fu, Meng Tan, Bian Xi, Wang Zhi, and Qin Qi in swift succession, proving again that loyalty is a blade as sharp as any weapon.

A pivotal revelation arrives with shocking clarity: it is Emperor Xian, not Cao Cao, who issues the order to kill Guan Yu. This twist reorients Guan Yu’s choices and deepens the moral weight of his struggle. Before he can reunite with Liu Bei, he confronts a brutal dilemma about whether to remain by Cao Cao’s side or to pursue a more personal fidelity that seems increasingly fragile.

Qi Lan’s maneuvering continues to complicate the path forward. She pretends affection and speaks of seeking Liu Bei’s consent for their marriage, but her underlying aim is to derail Guan Yu’s aid to Cao Cao. Guan Yu refuses to be manipulated, but the tension erupts as Qi Lan stabs him, a betrayal that reverberates through the unfolding events. Emperor Xian’s assassins burst into the scene, and Qi Lan is killed in the crossfire, a cruel consequence of a struggle that was never meant to be resolved peacefully.

With Qi Lan gone and the weight of shifting loyalties bearing down, Guan Yu makes a decisive choice: he will not compromise his bond with Liu Bei and the cause they share. He turns away from Cao Cao and the emperor and heads back to pursue the fight against their rivals, dedicating the next two decades of his life to reuniting with Liu Bei and shaping the broader struggle that will define his legacy.

The scene returns to Guan Yu’s funeral, where Cao Cao’s sorrow is tempered by a hard, almost reflective honesty. He sheds tears for a friend who stood by his side and who refused to bend to pressure, acknowledging that responsibility for Guan Yu’s fate does not rest solely on him but also on others such as Sun Quan, Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang.
