The Lone Hand

Zack Hallock and his son Josh move to the town of Timberline to start a new farm. In town, Josh befriends Daniel Skaggs and meets Daniel's sister Sarah Jane, establishing the key relationships for the story. The arrival sets up the community dynamics and the looming conflict.

Timberline erupts in a street shootout that leaves the sheriff dead, creating a power vacuum. The Varden brothers, Jonah and Gus, begin a reign of violence that unsettles the region and raises the stakes for everyone in town.

Zack is financially strapped, but a visit to George Hadley's horse farm changes his prospects. After Sarah Jane brings muffins and the pair get acquainted, Hadley offers to trade two horses for Zack's first grain harvest, presenting a tempting deal.

Hadley urges Zack to join the Regulators to restore order in the absence of a sheriff. Zack declines, much to Josh’s disappointment, narrowing his path and solidifying his independence from Hadley’s scheme.

Josh witnesses the Vardens ambushing and killing a Pinkerton detective, escalating the town’s danger. He hurries to warn Zack, but Jonah overhears Zack telling Josh not to report what he saw, creating tension and risk.

The Vardens waylay Zack's wagon carrying grain headed to Hadley, destroying the harvest. They propose Zack join a robbery, and he agrees, while Josh follows and witnesses the decision.

Zack returns to the farm with a new wagon and team of horses, but lies about how he obtained the money, claiming he won it in a card game. The deception strains his relationships with Sarah, Daniel, and Josh.

Sarah Jane marries Zack, but his nightly disappearances soon lead her to suspect his involvement in wrongdoing. The marriage grows tense as trust frays.

Zack confesses that he is a Pinkerton agent working undercover, explaining that he could not risk telling them earlier while trying to root out the ringleader. He reveals the truth to Sarah Jane (and Josh), explaining his need to identify Hadley’s operation.

Hadley is revealed as the true criminal ringleader and he kidnaps Josh. A fight ensues, and Zack defeats Hadley and the remaining Varden brother, ending the immediate threat.

After the confrontation, Zack abandons any plan to flee and decides to stay on the farm. He commits to building a life with Josh, Daniel, and Sarah Jane, turning Timberline into his new home.
