The Load

In 1999, Vlada, a middle-aged man, is hired as a courier to transport a mysterious cargo through war-torn Kosovo to Belgrade. This is his third trip on this dangerous route, and he is warned to drive without stopping under any circumstances.

After being dropped off at the location of the waiting truck, Vlada starts his journey toward Belgrade. He feels the weight of uncertainty as he is left alone with his mission and the undisclosed cargo.

While driving, Vlada encounters a burning car wreck blocking the bridge, forcing him to take a detour. This sudden change in plans pushes him further into unknown territories amidst the chaos of war.

Vlada meets a group of refugees at a nearby riverbed who direct him on his way. One of them takes advantage of the situation by selling him cigarettes, showcasing the desperation of the people during the conflict.

A young man named Paja approaches Vlada, asking for a ride to Belgrade. Initially refusing, Vlada later finds Paja has secretly hitched a ride by standing on the back of the truck, prompting Vlada to reluctantly allow him to join.

As they travel, Vlada and Paja share stories about their lives and backgrounds. Despite their differences, they discover a common ground as they commiserate over their war-torn homeland and reflect on the state of their lives.

Paja shares his music made with his band, giving Vlada a glimpse of his artistic side. After Vlada admits that he doesn't care about the cargo they are transporting, Paja decides it's time for him to get off the truck before reaching Belgrade.

Before departing, Paja gifts Vlada his cassette tape and encourages him to contact him if he ever wants to join the band. The emotional farewell emphasizes the stark contrast of their journeys as Paja disappears into an abandoned playground.

Vlada finally arrives at his destination and receives his payment, a relief after the harrowing journey. However, relief soon turns to horror as he watches soldiers unload dead bodies from his truck into a mass grave.

In a moment of shock, Vlada realizes the true nature of the cargo he has transported. The sight of the mass grave forces him to confront the grim reality of war and its impact on humanity.

After a restless night sleeping in the waiting area of the government building, Vlada is instructed by an officer to return the truck and clean the cargo hold. He is propelled back into the harsh reality of his life post-mission.

Once home, Vlada discusses the ongoing bombings with his wife and teenage son, Ivan. The tension around their conversation touches on the uncertainty and fear that looms over their lives.

Vlada attempts to bond with Ivan, who has grown emotionally distant from him. Their strained relationship becomes evident as Vlada tells him stories of his family's past, seeking to connect over their shared experiences of war.

Vlada gives Ivan the cassette tape Paja had gifted him, hoping it will bridge the gap between them. Ivan listens to it with a friend, igniting dreams of forming a band, showcasing a desire for creativity amidst chaos.

The film concludes with a sense of hope as Ivan expresses his intent to start a band. This moment becomes a poignant reflection of the impact of music and passion as a means to cope with the difficult realities of their world.
