Danijel, a Serb, encounters Ajla, a Bosnian, on the lively dance floor, igniting a spark of attraction between them. However, their burgeoning romance is violently interrupted by a bomb attack, plunging them into the chaos of the 1992 Yugoslav civil war. Suddenly, Danijel finds himself thrust into the role of a soldier, bound to follow orders, while Ajla becomes a woman with every reason to fear for her safety.
In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Ajla is taken to an internment camp where horrifying acts of violence, including rape and torture, are tragically commonplace. Among the camp’s ominous henchmen is Danijel, forced by circumstances to confront his own role in this nightmare. To safeguard her, he proposes that Ajla, an artist by nature, draw portraits of his fellow soldiers, navigating the treacherous waters of their dual existence.
As their relationship starts out ignited by intense passion, Ajla soon recognizes the leverage she holds and seizes the opportunity to use Danijel’s feelings to rally support for an uprising among the other Bosnian women, striving to escape the horrors around them. Torn between the need for his father’s approval—who harbors a deep-seated hatred for Islam—and the emotional turmoil of his position, Danijel desperately attempts to assert his masculinity before Ajla, compelled to prove himself even to her.
Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut profoundly illuminates the human experience amid the brutalities of the Balkan war. The narrative unfolds as a poignant struggle for survival, showcasing a battlefield where the lines blur between oppression and desire, along with strategic maneuvering and deeply felt emotions. As the characters navigate this treacherous landscape, we witness how love can both bind and complicate human connections in the face of unimaginable adversity.
