From her Parkville jail cell, Vergie Winters (Ann Harding) watches Senator John Shadwell’s funeral procession and recalls a twenty-year-old chapter of their lives: the day the young lawyer John Shadwell (John Boles) returned to Parkville from an extended honeymoon with his wife Laura Shadwell (Helen Vinson) and sought out Vergie, his former lover. After a passionate embrace, John explains that he walked away when Vergie’s father claimed she was pregnant by laborer Hugo McQueen (Lon Chaney Jr.), a lie Vergie reveals Laura’s father paid to derail their romance with a price tag of $10,000.

Despite the scandal, their bond remains, and the political path soon complicates it. As John campaigns for Congress, Preston, a powerful political boss, pressures Vergie to end the affair so he can offer his crucial backing, a demand she reluctantly accepts only to see John refuse to abandon her. The couple’s defiance continues through the victory that follows, with John moving to Washington, D.C., alongside Laura while Vergie bears his child under an assumed name. John later adopts the baby, a daughter named Joan, who is revealed to be Vergie’s child (the infant Joan is portrayed by Bonita Granville Bonita Granville).

When World War I erupts, John returns to Parkville and resumes the affair with Vergie. A late-night rendezvous is witnessed by a town gossip and reported to Mike Davey (Donald Crisp), John’s adversary in local politics. Vergie’s millinery shop suffers a boycott, and she becomes shunned by most of the town, save for a few sympathetic figures. The trouble deepens when Davey arranges for Preston’s son, Barry (Ben Alexander), to steal a page from a hotel register bearing Vergie’s assumed name. In a tragic twist, Preston believes Barry is a burglar and shoots him, later telling the household that a burglar killed his son.

Years pass, and John earns wealth as an airline entrepreneur and rises to the rank of senator. Vergie spends her mornings watching Joan, now grown, ride with her fiancé Ranny Truesdale (Frank Albertson). Laura, determined to protect her social standing, hires a private detective to prove that Joan is the rival’s daughter, but the effort fails. Laura forces John to tell Joan that she is adopted, a revelation that Stirs relief and acceptance in Joan and Ranny, who press ahead with their wedding plans.

The wedding day nears, but the delicate balance of loyalty and prestige shatters when John reveals he intends to divorce Laura so he can marry Vergie. Laura, clinging to her status, pursues Vergie and shoots John in a fit of fury. Vergie refuses to name Laura as the killer, is convicted and sent to prison, and serves a year of hard time. In a final turn of mercy, Joan and Ranny, having heard Laura’s dying confession about the murder, secure Vergie’s pardon and offer her a permanent place in their home, allowing a once-scorned woman to reclaim a measure of peace and belonging.
