Set in a tiny Ukrainian village at the start of the 1941 war with Germany, the dim‑witted Private Ivan Chonkin is assigned to guard a downed aircraft. Abandoned by his superiors, he seizes the chance to court the village postmistress, Njura, until the local militia finally catch wind of his antics.
